This page provides a access to back issues of the CNI Parkinson Press Newsletters.
Winter
2006 This edition presents the third in a series of articles
regarding non-motor features of Parkinson’s disease. This article will
discuss the cognitive disorders in PD such as difficulty with attention
and memory. This newsletter
issue also describes the services provided by the CNI Thompson Center for Restorative
Neurosurgery, including thalamotomy, pallidotomy, and deep brain stimulation
of the thalamus, subthalamic nucleus, and globus pallidus. Also of note is an
annoucement of the Progressive Health Center, a non-profit organization located
near Swedish Medical Center that is dedicated to helping individuals through
complementary and holistic therapies that integrate with conventional medical
treatments. (www.progressivehealthcenter.org)
Fall
2006 With this issue we feature an article "Medications:
What are MAO's and what is tyramine?" After describing MAO and tyramine,
the article also examines MAO-inhibitor medications recently approved by FDA
and two others coming soon. "Sleep Disturbances in Parkinson's Disease" is the
second in a series of articles regarding non-motor features of Parkinson’s
disease. Specifically, the article covers Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), sleep
apnea, rapid eye movement (REM) Behavior Disorder, excessive daytime sleepiness,
and drug-induced sleep attacks.
Summer
2006 In this issue, meet Dr. Alan Diamond, our new Medical Director.
Read about Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a rare, potentially life-threatening
neurological
disorder most often associated with an adverse reaction to neuroleptic or antipsychotic
drugs. Also learn about non-motor symptoms that may or may not occur in the
individual with PD, such as autonomic dysfunction.
Spring
2006 This issue includes articles about bladder dysfunction in PD and
new medications that have completed phase III study and will hopefully be
approved and available in the United States in the first half of 2006. Also
learn about clinical trials and why they are important.
