Moreover, we have learned how to prevent stroke with surgical treatments, such as endarterectomy, and with medical treatments, such as anti-thrombotic therapy. Exciting intravascular treatments have become available. Sophisticated imaging techniques have revolutionized our diagnostic capabilities. Innovative rehabilitation has improved recovery, and previously unimaginable work in neuro-restoration has begun. In this issue of the CNI REVIEW, we sample several areas of continuing clinical interest as we move into the Decade After the Decade of the Brain. In the first article, Dr. Marcoux presents an overview of the common and sometimes perplexing issue of stroke in young adults. Dr. Trevarthen and Dr. Ricci follow with related articles: a detailed discussion on the role of hypercoagulable states as a cause of stroke, and an update on the latest in diagnostic imaging techniques. Dr. Draznin discusses an issue that is much on the mind of stroke survivors and their families, namely the role of nontraditional therapies in stroke rehabilitation and prevention. Dr. Rabb gives us an update on the role of surgical treatment in stroke prevention. Finally, Dr. Wechsler, a CNI visiting professor, reports on the seminal work in neuro-restoration that is being done at the University of Pittsburgh. In this endeavor, and in continuing efforts to improve and expand the Stroke Program at CNI, I am most grateful to the members of the CNI Stroke Council for their advice and support: Frank Becky, MD, Vicki Camp, RN, Colleen Dingmann, RN, MS, Elena Draznin, MD, James Dreisbach, MD, David Dungan, MD, Michael Hunt, MD, Trish Leavitt, RN, MA, James Luethke, MD, Kristen Mahan-Moutaw, Marc Marcoux, MD, Jason Margheim, PharmD, Holly Monatt, Reg.
